 Phil Southerland is a Bike Gamer and Diabetic Gamer. In an effort to be an over acheiver Phil began Team Type 1 for Bike Gamers with Type 1 Diabetes.
Phil thanks for sitting down with us and answering these burning questions.
You are Type 1 Diabetic, yes? What does that mean?
Yes I am, diagnosed at 7 months old. It means that my body does not regulate my blood sugar, so I have to do it via testing, shots, and exercise. When a person without diabetes blood sugar goes up, the pancreas produces the right amount of insulin so that it goes back to normal. Also, when it drops too much (from exercise per say) your body will produce glucagon, which causes a release of the glycogen from your liver. My body does neither, so it is all about balancing. It is a fun game to play!!
Why did you decide to start the Team Type 1? Don't you feel like you are being mean by excluding Type 2s?
Started Team Type 1, with the goal of motivating people with diabetes to get excited about taking care of themselves, to raise money for a cure, and to provide an affordable health insurance platform for people with diabtes (I cannot purchase health insurance on my own right now.) So far everything is going well.
Feel mean: Not a chance. We will have Team Type 2 beginning in 2008. I am looking for any Type 2's interested in being inspirational, and competing in RAAM!!!
You guys did RAAM and won, yes? What do you say to the people that say you did not really win since it was a team event? What do you say to the people that think RAAM is only a solo race?
Yes, won it, set the record. 3053 miles- 5 days 16 hours and 4 minutes. To the people that say we didn't win: Who cares, the record books say we own it!!!
And to the only a solo race: I guess we were one team of diabetics, so that makes us a solo team, which means that we won that category also... The solo guys are tough, they fought through some nasty conditions. Much respect for them. I also think they grew up under power lines as a kid...
Did you guys jack up your insulin intake during the race to enhance your performance?
Of course. How do you think we went so fast? Actually on a total daily intake, we were way down. After 2 days, a very small amount had a very drastic affect on us. Sometimes, overdosing would cause us to turn chug hammer gel by the gallon. There were times when we had to eat a lot, so we would "jack up" the dose!!
As a kid did being diabetic create drama for you? Did fights break out because kids wanted to beat up the diabetic kid?
Drama dealing with my mother, who was always stressed. Most kids just wanted to beat me up cause I was a smart allec. It worked out, cause I always had a huge cooler full of food in case I went low. So I could share with the big kids, have friends, and beat up less...
What advice do you have for diabetic people that race or that are perhaps scared to race because of their diabetes?
How does diabetes affect your racing and training?
I have to eat very consistently. If my blood sugar gets too low, it takes away my ability to really suffer on the bike. SO it is a must to pump myself full of hammer gel so that it does not happen. Training and racing does make my diabetes much easier to control. Plus, thanks to my FreeStyle Flash, it only take a few seconds to check...
You know that old dude that does the diabetes commercial? That dude that used to do the Oatmeal commercials? Yeah, that old dude with the nearly bald head and mustache. Do you think that diabetics could have found a better spokesman? What about LeBron or Kobe or somebody like that.
Wilfred Brimley who said, "I have diabetes, and thanks to lib medical, I check my blood sugar, and I check it often." Yeah, I have gotten made fun of more thanks to Mr Brimley, than anything else. He did make it easy to make fun of us, so it took the pressure off the people who were afraid to bring it up. I was thinking more like Shaq!
When you were a younger racer you crashed a good bit. Do you think this had anything to do with your blood sugar level or was it just being dumb?
Definitely just being dumb. Some things never change...
What has been most gratifying for you about the Team Type 1?
The thanks that I get from kids and parents, who have made positive changes in their lives because of the team. It has also allowed me to travel a lot, and meet a lot of great people, especially like those at the Bike Game!!! You guys rock!
Do any people try to fake being Type 1 to get on your team?
Almost- I have had 5 close friends wishing they were Type 1's so that they could do RAAM.
Is being Type 1 better than being Type 2? Is it kinda like a Cat 1 vs a Cat 2? Did you have to earn points to upgrade to a Type 1?
They both have their unique challenges. Type 1 is more often found in kids, and is harder to learn. Type 2's usually get it later in life, and have to make very drastic changes in their lives to stay healthy. Lots of diet and exercise. Type 1's just test a lot, and do a lot of shots! Not quite an upgrade, but if your control is good enough, you are a professional diabetic....
Is anyone else in your family diabetic?
Nope, flying solo on that one.
Does being Type 1 help or hurt you with the ladies?
Helps. At those awkward moments on the first date, I can just pull out my...needle and do a shot. That will typically bring up 30 minutes worth of chat.
What is the ultimate goal of Team Type 1?
My dream is that one day, I wake up, and not a single person ever again goes blind from this disease. If we all had access to adequate health care, this would be much more likely to happen. If we all took better care of ourselves, we would most likely have better access to healthcare. So it will be a step by step process to achieving that dream.
When was the last time you told you mother that you loved her?
Today fool. Also the last time I told yours that I love her.
What can people do to get involved and show their support or help out?
If you like to ride bikes, and want to get involved, you could do a JDRF Ride to Cure. www.jdrf.org These are a great vacation, and it only takes a appx $3K in fundraising to go. Team Kits are also available for sale. And of course, telling anyone you know with diabtes about the team.
When Team Type 1 was being formed how was it received? Did you meet much resistance or did people "get it"?
There has been a little resistance all along. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. I had about 30 people tell me (who knows how many kept their mouths shut) I was crazy, and would never get funding for RAAM. All it took was a couple of believers, in Litespeed, Zipp Wheels, Hammer Nutrition, Zero Gravity, Weather Channel, Rudy, Oakley, and of course Holly Kulp, of Abbott Diabtes Care (FreeStyle Flash.) She is the one who made sure that we would do the race. Were it not for Holly, I do not know if it would have happened.
Is there one thing that sticks out in your mind as being the most memorable part of this experience?
Dream Big, and do the small stuff necessary to get there, and you can achieve anything. We can do it!!
