We got an interview with Becky Broeder, the best bar room brawler on the
Pro circuit. Becky is currently in Tucson, Aridzone-ah, schooling and
training at the University of Nearly Mexico. We caught up with her on
Myspace and fired off a few quick questions...

Jon Hamblen: Bec, you mind if I call you Bec? no... yes? oh, you mean no as in
"dont." ok good.

Becky, what team did you ride with this year? *

Becky Broeder: Hub Racing/Cannondale, a ten person team out of DC that kicks ass and
actually has a really good budget and staff.




JH: Are you the tallest girl in the world?

BB: No, second. My teammate, Jeanette is. She makes me feel 'petite'. She is
6'5" I think, but my legs are longer. I think I do have the longest legs
in the world. That is a fact.


JH: What's your favorite bike tire right now?

BB: You know, Schwalbe, even though they 'sponsored' TDS/Schwalbe last year
and I only saw two sets...I like 'em, nonetheless. I like that Clay guy
in Canada, too. He drove to Cascade to give me some tires, or so I
thought.  *(ed. the editors have no stance on these tires as we have yet
to test them.)




JH: How many times did you crash this season, any hospital trips?*

BB: Well, some asshole took me out in El Tour and I screamed to him that he
is a #$%#in' Asshole in public, then there was the chick surfing at
Philly. I was on top. That is rare (poor girls below..), and then there
was the girl that crashed me in the 'Race to The Line', the prologue of
Bank of America in Charlotte.



I believe I told her to 'take it easy we aren't going to die tonight' and actually,
I think several people almost did, so I mis-spoke.


JH: where are you living?

BB:In my townhome in Tucson, AZ


Becky lives just over that ridge.


JH: Will you ever move to winston salem? Why/why not?

BB: Don't assume. Geez. I could. I never know. Perhaps. If the love of my
life wanted me to move there, I wouldn't really complain. So many
places. I am fairly certain I'm off to San Fran next.


JH: Do you have any more races this year?*

BB: Nope. None. AND I WILL NEVER EVER DO EL TOUR EVER AGAIN.


JH: How about trying some cyclocross this fall?

BB: I had a cross season in MT. It was the ugliest sight. I am a steady
state person, pretty calm, and it was so spastic. I would climb off,
talk to people, then climb over, look at the scenery, then climb back
on. I was in it just to go out with the boys and eat greasy breakfasts.
I was always hungover, too, since it was fall. Tucson cross is the
lamest thing I have seen. It's gorgeous weather. Jones and I saw a cross
match here last fall and I kept thinking, 'what is missing?' then
realized it was mud and wind and rain and stuff. Lame. They were racing
in a park. That's it. *(ed. we find most of Tucsonny to be LAME.)



Jones isn't afraid of pies.

JH: Who's not afraid of the pies? did you see how heavy jonesy was at the
uspro road race?

BB: awwww. Hey. Look. I spend a lot of time and energy telling that guy
that he's lovable no matter his size. Easy. And he doesn't like pies,
unless it's Zachary's Pizza Pies we're talking. F-n guy. He could be
1000 pounds and still kick most people's asses if he wanted to. *(ed.
clearly, we are taking a jab at jones, we respect him and his decision
to eat.)


JH: What's it gonna take to get more girls out racing bikes?
I can wear a skinsuit more often if you think it'll help.

BB: That's good. Ya. I think if you got less women to crash, that's a start.
Maybe, maybe, maybe more prize money, too. (ed. skinsuit it is.)

JH: What do you think about these australian riders calling womens races the
"goat race." what does it mean exactly, really, we don't get it?...

BB: Goats are hot to the Aussies. Makes sense. I'm flattered, really.


JH: Do you warm up for road races on a trainer?

BB; Hell no.


JH: What classes are you taking this fall?

BB: Project Management, Art History 221 (we have to take a ton of them),
Space Planning 243, Lighting Design


JH: Will you continue to live in the Tucsonny region when you finish school?*

BB: No. I'm outta here. Pronto.


JH: Do you actually like the training there in tucsonny? we find it boring
and car-y.

BB: I am bored with no cold weather. But I like Lemmon. I am just not a
desert person. At all.

JH: When you lived with mike dietrich did he stuff up the toilet, like
every day?

BB: Well, no. But he did stuff up the bathtub one time with vomit. That was
my favorite trick.



Becky might want Wong, but we want this kid, cuz he's a Blood.

JH: If you were to take on an entire frat house, who would you want by your
side?

BB: Prolly Phil Wong cuz he would be the one that gets carted off by the
fuzz. Not Dietrich because he would crack up laughing while he was
punching some guy. Second choice would be Hamblen because of his quick
wit. He would probably buy them some beer and call it good. Wait, he did
that. *(ed. Hamblen was ready to kill those guys, i hear...)

JH: How many frequent flier miles did you earn this year?*

BB: shoot. That requires some math. *(ed. still waiting for her "math"...)


JH: How many miles have you ridden this year?

BB: I have no watch, no powertap thing, no bike computer, no nuthin. Maybe
my cell phone can tell me? (ed. sounds good, sounds like a lot of riding.)



Thanks to Gord's retirement, Becky is one with the bottle.

JH: How has gord's retirement effected your riding?

BB: Well, his retirement parties have led to me feeling like shit on several
rides. He's having a huge ho-down here in Jan. I think that I may take
over his Mayoral position here in Tucsonny. CROSS YOUR FINGERS!


JH: Who is your favorite 5'8" pro that lives in winston?*(ed. HAMBLEN!?!)

BB: Does Stevic live there? (ed. no, he doesn't... he's
in charlotte...)


JH: How many ebay auctions do you have going right now?*
wanna give us a link?

BB: Here's the deal. I've been debating for days on
whether or not to ebay a set of wheels I received from an ex-boyfriend
as a 'break up gift'. Never been used. What do you think? Is that wrong?
(ed. yes, it's wrong. men should never give a break up gift.)


JH: What else?

BB: I like long walks on the beach under a full moon, holding hands in the
park, candlelight dinners with lots of wine, and quiet nights at home. I
also think I might want a boyfriend for the fall.
